Commuters already can't get enough of the Nissan LEAF; it's the world's best-selling electric vehicle. But now that news has surfaced that the LEAF could double its EPA-rated 84 mile range, we think even more car shoppers will make the switch to our award-winning EV.

Technological breakthroughs are Nissan's forte and sources say the company has a big one in store for LEAF enthusiasts. An anonymous Nissan engineer leaked news that in coming years shoppers can expect the EV to have about a 250 mile range, which is a huge increase (more than double actually) over the outgoing model, although this number may be based on European mileage ratings.

An increase like this might seem like speculation until you consider what a Nissan spokesman by the name of Jeff Kuhlman told Daily Kanban, a well-known auto industry publication. Kuhlman stated, "We continue our R&D efforts because we believe that we can do more with battery electric, and very soon take the issue of range off of the table." Additionally, Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn made a recent TV appearance, during which he confirmed that Nissan has developed a new battery with an incredible range.

We don't know exactly when to expect the LEAF to receive its range-increasing changes, but sources say it's in the pipeline and could happen in the next few years.
